The transesophageal echocardiography becomes necessary when it is impossible to reach a diagnosis using a transthoracic echocardiogram. This technique allows visualizing the heart closely, using a probe introduced through the esophagus.

By precisely visualizing structures and certain areas of the heart, it allows to establish the severity and mechanism of valvular heart disease (aortic stenosis, mitral insufficiency) or ruling out the presence of thrombi in the chambers before cardioversion.

The patient must fast before the test. At the Quirónsalud Ciudad Real Hospital, we offer the possibility of performing the test under light sedation.
