Program of the II Conference on Cardiology Updates (October 7, Ciudad Real)

The II Conference on Cardiology Updates, hosted by the Cardiology Service of the Quirónsalud Ciudad Real Hospital, will take place on October 7, 2021.

The directors of the event are Dr. Ramón Maseda Uriza, of the Cardiology Service at the Quirónsalud and Ciudad Real General hospitals; and Dr. Alfonso Jurado Román, from the Hemodynamics Section of La Paz and Quirónsalud La Luz university hospitals.


After the opening remarks by Quirónsalud executives and the event organizers, five specialized panels will address the latest advances and treatments available for cardiology care.

The conference opens with a panel about clinical cardiology, with the moderation of Dr. Cristina Mateo Gómez and Dr. María Maeve Soto Pérez, cardiology residents at the Ciudad Real University General Hospital (HGUCR).


Dr. Daniel Salas Bravo, a clinical cardiologist at the HGUCR and Ciudad Real Quirónsalud Hospital, will open the panel with a presentation on the use of antidiabetic drugs in cardiology. Next, a presentation on the use of new medicines for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, by the clinical cardiologist Dr. Virgilio Martínez Mateo, from La Mancha Centro General Hospital and the Quirónsalud Alcazar Clinic.

The second panel will address interventional cardiology. Doctors Fernando Lozano Ruiz-Poveda and Ignacio Sánchez Pérez, from the Hemodynamics Section, and cardiologist Dr. Raquel Frías García, of the HGUCR, are in charge of the moderation.


Three papers make up this round table. Dr. Ariana Gonzálvez García - also from the Hemodynamics Section - refers to the percutaneous treatment of mitral insufficiency. The Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department of the Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda and Quirónsalud Madrid hospitals, Dr. Alberto Forteza Gil, will speak about the Transcatheter prosthesis system for the treatment of mitral insufficiency. The panel will be closed by Dr. José Cuenca Castillo, Head of the Cardiac Surgery Service of the A Coruña University Hospital, presenting the surgical treatment of mitral insufficiency in the 21st century.

The day will continue with a panel on atrial fibrillation, moderated by doctors from the HGUCR, the intensivist and head of the ICU, Dr. Ramón Ortiz Diaz-Miguel, and the cardiologist Dr. José María Arizón Muñoz.


The panelists will address two approaches to AF ablation. First, the rhythm control strategy, by Dr. Juan Benezet Mazuecos, Head of the Arrhythmia Unit of the Quirónsalud La Luz Hospital in Madrid. Second, the rescue strategy, by Dr. Jesús Piqueras Flores, Head of the Family Cardiopathy Unit of the HGUCR.

The fourth round table will focus on heart failure. The moderation is in charge of Dr. Manuel Rayo Gutiérrez, from the HGUCR and Clínica Cardiorreal, and Dr. Mohamed Monzer Khanji Khatib, from the Virgen de Altagracia Hospital in Manzanares.


Dr. Daniel García Fuertes, Head of the Clinical Cardiology Section of the Santa Bárbara Hospital in Puertollano, will update the management of the patient with chronic heart failure. Dr. Guadalupe Serrano Pradas, an internist at the HGUCR and Quirónsalud Ciudad Real Hospital, will address the subject of palliative care in patients with terminal chronic heart failure.

The fifth and last panel of the day will offer a look at sports cardiology and heart diseases. Cardiology residents from the HGUCR, Dr. Martin Negreira Caamaño and Dr. Andrés Felipe Cubides Novoa, will moderate the session.


The first presentation is about sports cardiology, by Dr. José Abellán Huerta, from the Santa Lucía General University Hospital in Cartagena, Murcia. The electrophysiologist and cardiologist, Dr. Juan Jiménez Jáimez, Head of the Cardiomyopathy Unit at the Virgen de las Nieves University Hospital in Granada, will talk about "red flags" in familial heart diseases. Finally, the Head of Pediatric Cardiology at the Quirónsalud Ciudad Real Hospital, Dr. Violeta Román Barba, will address congenital heart disease in adults.

Finally, Dr. Roberto Martín Reyes, Head of the Cardiology Department of the Hospital Quirónsalud La Luz in Madrid, will be the closing keynote speaker for the II Conference: Updates on Cardiology. The topic of his speech is "Digital hospitals: a telemonitoring project in cardiology."
