CARDIAC CT SCAN

This technique allows the rapid and non-invasive study of various pathologies of the cardiovascular system. In the case of patients with suspected problems in the heart's arteries, it enables their study to avoid the initial use of invasive procedures such as catheterization.

Cardiac CT without contrast may estimate cardiovascular risk by quantifying the amount of calcium present in the arteries, which gives an idea of the patient's "vascular age." This same test can calculate the amount of calcium on the aortic valve when there are doubts in the echocardiographic study as to its severity, making it possible to identify patients at high risk of presenting adverse events or who require short-term intervention on this valve.

On the other hand, it has become an essential diagnostic test for planning heart valve interventions (percutaneous aortic prosthesis implantation or TAVI) and before invasive procedures to eliminate cardiac arrhythmias, such as pulmonary vein ablation in patients with atrial fibrillation.
